The Rebel
Stefanie Sun, 27 Raffles Girls Secondary (1993-1994) By Tommy Wee
8 DAYS : You were in St Margaret’s Secondary for two years before you went over to Raffles Girls Secondary. Why?
Stefanie : My parents wanted a change of environment for me. They were worried that I was mixing with the wrong company in school.
8 DAYS : Why would they think that?
Stefanie : They just looked at my grades and started to worry. I would do pretty badly in some of my arts subjects, like get 18 marks for History, for example.
8 DAYS : 18 Marks? Did you decide to go home after 20 minutes?
Stefanie : I just completely didn’t study for it.
8 DAYS : Were you ever in a girl-gang?
Stefanie : No lah. We were just young and naughty. Who wouldn’t be at that age?
8 DAYS : What kind of mischief did you get up to in school then? Tell me your worst one.
Stefanie : Hmm…. The worst incident? Cannot lah, It cannot be printed. Ha ha.
8 DAYS : So how did you get the transfer from St Margaret’s to Raffles Girls Secondary?
Stefanie : Raffles Girls Secondary had just moved to a new campus, the one on Stevens Road, and they opened up extra classes. So they had more classes than students at that time. I took entrance exams for English, Chinese and Maths to get in. I didn’t pay to get in lah, if you were wondering. I didn’t end up in the best class, but I can say we all had a good time there. We had a wide spectrum of girls in the class, not just the extreme, brainy types.
8 DAYS : Describe yourself as a student.
Stefanie : Sometimes I was quiet and reserved, sometimes I was talkative. Basically, I had my moods in school lah. But I would say that I had this rebellious streak growing up. I was an Ah Lian really. Even then, I was nominated a class prefect and I enjoyed organizing events like the Talentine and Farewell Dinners. I also hated doing homework.
8 DAYS : Who doesn’t hate homework? You sound pretty normal as a student.
Stefanie : Yeah, I guess I was. I would sit in class and read a magazine, hiding it behind a textbook so that the teacher couldn’t see what I was reading. I scraped through Sec 3. But in Sec 4,I decided to buck up and sat in the front of the class instead. That helped.
8 DAYS : I hear girl-on-girl crushes are common in all-girl schools. Did you have any crushes in schools?
Stefanie : Yeah, I did. There was this butch-looking girl who looked just like a man. I had a crush on her. Why? She just looked like a man, and being in an all-girls school, that was the closest thing to a real boy. She even had a stubble! And one time, I received a letter from this Sec One girl. I can’t remember what it said through, ha ha. But I must say that my best friends are all from RGS. Even till today, they remain my closest friends. There’s absolutely nothing we keep from one another.
8 DAYS : So what did you do after school ? Hang out in Orchard Road?
Stefanie : No, we hung out at Serene Centre with boys from other schools. Just hang out, you know, with guys from RI, St Andrews and those from ITE.
8 DAYS : Did you develop any bad habits at that stage in your life?
Stefanie : No, I had a lot of space and freedom but there were certain things I wouldn’t do. Like drugs, or ride a motorbike, or join a gang.
8 DAYS : I’m sure you had crushes on boys. Did you have any rivals in love?
Stefanie : I’m so pretty, where got love rival? Ha ha.
8 DAYS : Does coming from RGS make you smarter as a celebrity ?
Stefanie : I think the experience made me more streetsmart. You just know what bullshit is. You know when someone is carving for attention and you know how to look out for yourself in certain situations. I’m really grateful I’m well-adjusted and that I didn’t end up in jail or something.
